It's really just "The Gulf", though, isn't it? Everyone who lives by it seems to just call it The Gulf. Not like there's another gulf to confuse it with, so why add 4-5 syllables.

Who cares what the water is called. It's so ****ing stupid. Went to the Jersey shore many times, went out on the ocean fishing, and never once did I specify "Atlantic Ocean". That won't change when it's renamed "The Great American Ocean"
