I NEEDED to see Piper get beat. He made WrestleMania. It was all built on the heat that he alone created, not hulk f*cking hogan and certainly not mister T, who's only (failed) job was to be rated-G role models. That's what kayfabe was about
randy savage drew massive heat, but it was done via near fatal injury stunts like when he broke Ricky steamboat's larynx and almost killed him...for real 😉. That plus always threatening to slap Elizabeth. Domestic abuse and attempted murder angles are cheap heat IMHO, but it was what it was.
Point is, once he turned babyface, he had to change the entire persona. He even had to politely hold the ropes for Elizabeth. It was very strict. Pre-90s babyfaces were rated G by law, to the point where you would trust them to babysit your kids
I think the first anti-babyface non-heel was Steve Austin. At least he's the first that I remember
Piper though, he was a master troll.

he was always a piece of shit. i was so blind as a kid and didn't see it, as blatant as it was.EXHIBIT A: i watched this show live. not the recap in the video, but the night it happened. still was blind
that time when a talk show host hurt his feefees, so hogan tricked him into allowing him to safely render him unconscious via sleeper hold and then dropped him onto a floor. wasn't a good look for mr T either

And plus Trump wasn’t in politics yet when you were a kid

Savage is probably my second favorite due to just how absurd the character was.
I was starting to check out of the WWF by 1988 though.
The undertaker also blurred the line, but it's weird...he kinda existed outside of kayfabe at the start. There was no way to make the fans hate him, but they were still too timid to make him a babyface. It was weird, and tbh I hated it. His matches were basically a horror scifi interlude from traditional kayfabe. They even fashioned his sitting up move from jason vorhees. That's what turned me away for a long time
I could have met him in like 2000ish at a convention, but he was such an awesome and intimidating presence that all I could do was watch in gape-jawed wonder as he Sheiked out and posed with otter people in full kayfabe. No regrets though. I was there and I witnessed
*Edit* I mean he was decked out in sheik garb, had a championship belt, and was cutting mock-promos. It was glorious
