Vatican officials asked mourners to keep their phones in their pockets, after several photos emerged of mourners with Francis' coffin in the background.
Some 90,000 people are thought to have queued to see Francis lying in state ahead of his funeral on Saturday, after he died on Monday aged 88.
"Visitors are invited not to take photos," a Vatican spokesman said.
Some onlookers who saw their fellow mourners taking photos said they felt it was not in the best taste.
