A person should have a certain awareness of consequence, you don't want your kid growing up and believing they can do whatever they want.

If you let your kid run around smashing shit up and hurt you then I think you should be allowed to excersise an amount of violence to show them that when they hurt directly, they get it back. Shouldn't be hit for stealing, or general misbehaving. The punishment always has to reflect the crime.

This is probably what you've been saying from the start though. aweherm I'm not good at interpreting people.
