Most of the time it's because stupid people tend to think a band is cooler if the band isn't mainstream or successful. I can't even count how many times I've talked about a band and then someone would go "yeah, I liked them before they got famous". As if this somehow gives them...I dunno, credibility?

It's not just with music, I've known people who basically stopped liking certain tv series or movies once they became popular. Despite the fact that the more popular these things are the longer they will stick around.

I don't know why people do this.
