I mean I could give you my full rundown of music history and the way that the divide between the mainstream and alternative sides of music has become increasingly large, with many alternative styles of music being co-opted by the radio (and now streaming or single-song purchases)-based 'singles' system, creating less interesting musical choices on the side of mainstream music and pushing forward-thinking artists further into obscurity to the general public, but the entire hypothesis is flawed imo, there are good artists that appeal to both sides of the spectrum (Kendrick Lamar comes to mind), but still overall music has further and further taken the route of the Motown system, i.e. teams of writers writing songs for other people to sing, and teams of management creating drama and publicity for these celebrity performers (this is a more modern development), to the point where most singer/performers don't even write their own lyrics, let alone know how to sling together a chord progression (I refuse to accept Nicki Manaj as being an 'artist' to any degree whatsoever), so whilst in a lot of ways the music industry is in a problematic and troubling era at the moment, there are still a number of artists that continue to write and play their own music, but in my opinion the quality of songs that they produce lack any real feeling to them, they sound processed, created, almost as if the system itself had pushed out any desire in artists to experiment, and although even that could be contested (I mean Kanye released the Yeezus album just a few years ago and that shit was pretty weird) I still think that "oh it sounds a bit different to everything else on the radio" is a term used by those too weak to explore really interesting modern music, I mean seriously there's a lot of great musicians and bands going in the world today in a multitude of genres, but overall my opinion on the state of modern music is not much different than it has been since I first became aware of the concept of music as culture, I mean I could give you the full rundown as a beat-by-beat, decade-by-decade essay, but if you read all of this then chances are you probably won't be arsed reading any moreGiving Swifty credit for playing an instrument in this day and age is a weird kind of praise also due to the multitude of excellent electronic music artists, but still, for her genre (the most mainstream of all pop music), the fact that she writes and plays a lot of her own material is commendable, even if the songs themselves generally sound like weak late-era Tom Petty numbers with less interesting musical interplay

Tom Petty is decent. Most new music today is shit. I'll take "The Doors" any day over..I dunno, shitty things? Taylor Swift, One Direction, Katy Perry.
Katy Perry looks like she was abducted by aliens and they implanted alien implants in her in the form of her eyeballs, she's got those weird ass eyes. Probably the same people who gave Brandy her alien eyes.
There's plenty of good new music, you just have to look for it. It's always been like that – a lot of pop in the '60s was boring bubblegum pop, but there just happened to be good bands at the time that became widely-known. There are still good bands today, they just aren't advertised due to the counter-culture being less marketable and people generally being content with the rock bands that do get big, who are usually pretty derivative and lacking the spark of originality that bands such as The Doors had.
The 1980s are a great example of the two sides of music and the way that they interact, since the '80s was rife with terrible pop music like WHAM! and shit, but on the other side of the chart you have some of the best and most innovative music ever created. Too many great '80s bands to name. But the decade is remembered for its shallow, post-disco pop.
