Began as a child, my aunt has worked in various CPS(Chicago public schools). A lot of times when I would have a day off me and my bro would come to a school she was working at to help out. She was a gym teacher so it was supposed to be "fun".
I was exposed to the conditions in these schools then, and in the future I would take side jobs with my aunt at these schools. Up until a few years ago I did this, and also by this point not only my aunt, but my brother and some other family members also work within the system.
So I have seen it up close and I have heard the horror stories.
Sad thing is, public schools in the suburbs here can be absolutely beautiful, but the ones in the inner city? Quality is shit, conditions are shit, and you'd be surprised how many public schools force the kids to also have clear back packs.(So they can't bring in guns to school and shit)

The resources they have are shitty. The quality of what they teach can also be shitty due to lack of resources, and they also let students run roughshod all over them. This one public high school Bogan, for one example, has students throwing shit in the halls. ACTUAL shit.
As for how to fix it? Hard to say, but the point is things have been bad for a long long time and it's like people suddenly just decided to notice cuz of Trump and who he appointed. Where was this 8 years ago? Or 4?
My aunt and others have been screaming about this shit for many years and nobody seemed to care. Now when people seem to finally wanna pay attention it seems to have more to do with politics than caring about education.
We need a complete overhaul of our education system. We could get rid of Betsy DeVos tomorrow and it wouldn't mean a thing.
Let me put it another way: I do not know much about cars. I have no clue how to fix them. And yet..I'm still capable of recognizing when a car is utterly f*cked up.
