See Wikipedia has this whole page on Humpty Dumpty, but they don't have just one section called "Why is Humpty Dumpty a ****ing EGG?"

I think it was the illustation for him in various poem books, not 100% sure though. They probably wanted to present the poem 'friendlier' for kids and stuff, since kids don't care about cannons/king Richard III, or any of the other rampant theories about it's origin.
