Just curious, as it's happened to a friend of mine and we both think it's rather sad.

Never been down that road myself. Bit of a grey area when it comes to dating a friend's ex. My best mate thinks it's a dog act. Personally I believe that if enough time has passed between them braking up and you getting in on some of that, then there shouldn't be an issue. "enough time" is entirely subjective though. Some people may never get over it, others might not give a shit after a week. It all depends on the length and seriousness of the relationship, as well as how close a friend you are.
