Because he was/is a major celebrity; arguably the biggest in the music industry, who had an extremely controversial life.
Wiki has him at 500 million in royalties from his music career, which seems very low to me.
More so before he became a recluse 10+ years ago, but if you go anywhere in the world, people instantly know who he is.
Has the best selling album of all time under his belt, with 'Thriller.'
