Universal has won a four-studio bidding war to pick up the film rights to the classic Atari video game "Asteroids," says The Hollywood Reporter. Matthew Lopez will write the script for the feature adaptation, which will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

I want to see Pac-Man next.

Hehehee *Senses a gritty, urban, cynical storyline involving avenging the death of Ms.Pacman and rescuing Pacman Jr, Bryan Mills style.*

While theyre at it they should do a movie of that arcade game, Robocop. 😖hifty:

I bet they over do the graphics on Asteroids.
I, as a purist of course, will accept nothing other than pure wireframe 2d polygons. 😛

This is stupid. How can you make a game like Asteroids into a movie? It's only a matter of time until Joust is made into a movie. Oh wait...

😐

*Waits for them to make Galaga: The Movie.*

Well we all remember how good the Mario movie was. 😖hifty:

"Pong," in theaters everywhere!!

Asteroids Movie Plot Unveiled

In case you've been wondering how would a story be crafted around a game that consisted - literally - of a white triangle shooting down white circles in a single black screen, don't woryy: we've got the answer for you.

In a recent interview, Lornezo di Bonaventura, the Asteroids film producer revealed some details about the plot of the upcoming movie.

"It's funny because people say there's nothing in the game, but that's not entirely right," he said. "I was attracted to Asteroids, plain and simple, because I think what it tells you is that there's going to be this big thing in space. We've crafted a really strong, deep mythology for the thing. Without divulging too much about it, it's two lead characters -- two brothers -- who have to go through a seminal experience to figure out their relationship, against this huge backdrop."

Bonaventura then affirmed that the movie will also " have some guys in spaceships blowing stuff up, or else you haven't honored the fun of Asteroids."
