In basically every major DBZ battle the villain "should have won", they have to make the villains seem overpowering so it's exciting, you know the hero is really in danger. Same for a lot of other manga/anime. In fact it's a good rule for fiction in general.

i mean they where dead even and piccolo had the upper hand then a head butt knocked him out
