Obama wins Nobel Peace prize

Started by Darth Jello6 pages

I'm enjoying the overreaction by the Right Wing and the craziness when Glenn Beck says that he should give the award to him for his 9/12 Project and on behalf of the tea baggers. I mean yeah, he didn't deserve it but that doesn't warrant the shit they've been spewing about it this morning. It pretty much fits in with what Alan Grayson said yesterday to congress.

Obama could invent the cure for fat and the conservatives would blame him for objectifying women and for being history's greatest monster in some other way. Although I'm sure Rush Limbaugh would still buy it illegally.

2009

The prize goes to:

BARACK OBAMA for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.

Announcement:

reasons given:

-Envisioning a nuclear free world (how many bombs has he disarmed?)
-Reestablishing unilateral negotiations (not with the Taliban... doesn't this also mean: "following the laws he agreed to follow"?)
-Respecting the role of the UN and international institutions (A qualification shared by the leaders of almost all first world nations)
-Addressing climate change (which apparently strengthens democracy and human rights...)
-Captured the world's attention (Bush did it)
-Hope for a better future (irrelevant)
-His values about diplomacy are the same as those shared by the majority of the world (this is getting to the point of nonsense...)

post announcement interview

3 qualifications for the peace prize as outlined by Alfred Nobel

-Improved relations between nations
-Reductions in the sizes of armed forces
(they give him this because he envisions a world without nuclear weapons)
-holding of peace conference (which they give him for international diplomacy, which is the same as the first...)

Basically, they gave it to him because he was not a neo-con war monger, but a pseudo liberal war monger

anyways, ironically, the Nobel site is terrible, so the links might not work.

EDIT: that second video, crazy obama worship from the guy...

Holy crap, it really takes nothing to get a Nobel Peace prize.

😂 You don't have enough room on your mantel.

What can we expect from the prize committee that when looking at physics though the photoelectric effect was cooler than relativity?

Apparently for 'promoting diplomacy'. It was voted for in Feb, dude had been in office less than a fortnight. What the **** are they doing in Stockholm?

I'd like to correct myself. He was nominated in Feb, voted in in Oct.

There are so many people who better deserve it than obama and al gore and others. The prize is just stupidity at this point.

who do you think deserved it more this year?

The Nobel has become a political tool. I'm just curious if making Obama out to be an ass here was intentional or just a poorly planned idea.

I'd like to think it was a move to make the Bush years look shittier, but happened to backfire.

from the sound of the committee members talking about him, I don't think they wanted to make him look bad.

Though I agree, it will be very difficult for him to accept the award

I'd guess that before the other. But.

He's stuck, if he accepts, then he looks like a pampered a-hole. If he doesn't, people will label him an inconsiderate a-hole, who thinks himself above all.

I'd like to the the list of people he beat, but it's to remain sealed for 50 years. As is procedure for the NPP. I'll mark my calendar.

Maybe he got the prize for shaking hands with Hugo Chavez. Although I would award the "WD World Prize in Coolness" if someone would KO Chavez rigth on the kisser.

not even that, they've built up things he mentioned on the campaign trail or maybe his book, and extrapolated it to mean he is going to pass major resolutions on arms control and nuclear disarmament, at the same time getting the rest of the world to solve climate change, at the same time as not only rebuilding America's image, but diplomatically solving some of the most intractable problems in the world.

Its almost assured he is going to fall short of what they are giving him the award for.

The only other name I've seen is Nicolas Sarkozy. Maybe it was a slow year, even though they had a record number of nominees.

He probably will rebuild America's image. The rest are things they couldn't begin to guess at (unless he secretly solved the mid-East crisis his first week in and is waiting to mention that they're just play fighting over there).

On a side not I've never even understood why people expect a "nuclear free" world as a remote possibility. It's like trying to get a "knife free" world but on an international scale.

There were a couple people in China and the Mid-East who were expected to have nominations. Most of them are locked up for "inciting subversion of the government" or such at the moment.

wut?

And this is for real? He actually got it?

Obama got the award because Europe and the Rest of The World Rooted for him in The US Presidential Campagin.

When he spoke outside the U.S. addressing the world Media he was well received. The only other U.S. national to cultivate such a large scale positive reception outside the U.S. is (insert name here)

Obama was given the Award on the strength of his Speeches and not for Achievements in Office.

It is common knowledge his speeches are usually made fun of within the U.S.

Outside the U.S. they have made a tangible impact in mitigating tension built up by previous administrations.

voted No. for he does not deserve the Award.
