It was a limited release December 2008, and wide released January 2009.

I'm guessing you were expecting to see big epic fight scenes since its based on a Comic book.....
I was expecting big epic fights. However, I liked the movie more than I expected to because it was more story driven than I expected (I had low expectations because I thought the whole thing would be "BANG!" BOOM!" etc.).

That's bullhonkey. Also, I'm putting in my vote right now for Avatar as the most overrated movie of '09 (and the decade for that matter).
I wouldn't even call Avatar the Best SciFi/Fantasy movie of the year, either. What with Star Trek, District 9, Moon...even Watchmen is perhaps superior.
Out of the ones mentioned, I adored:
Up
Moon
Inglourious Basterds
The Hurt Locker - minus the horrible camera work
Drag Me To Hell
District 9
AntiChrist
Let The Right One In
Some more I liked this year:
(500) Days of Summer
L'instinct de Mort, and L'ennemi public no.1(Mesrine parts 1 and 2) - the first film is the strongest and most enjoyable to me, but very good films from France. Vincent Cassel was amazing in these films.
Others I haven't seen or are not coming into my head right now.
