Cthulhu Chronicles: Tidings of madness and woe (OOC/REG)
Cthulhu Chronicles: Tidings of madness and woe
Chapter One?
Loathsome Cthulhu rose then from the deeps and raged with exceeding great fury against the Earth Guardians. And They bound his venomous claws with potent spells and sealed him up within the City of R'lyeh wherein beneath the waves he shall sleep death's dream until the end of the Aeon. Beyond the Gate dwell now the Old Ones; not in the spaces known unto men but in the angles betwixt them. Outside Earth's plane They linger and ever awaite the time of Their return; for the Earth has known Them and shall know Them in time yet to come.
We live in a world that shun the very thought of magic and of ancient beings. We live in a world where logic and science is all that matter, where heretics are judged insane. Theorists has at times spoken though in belief that insanity perhaps is not as insane as it might imply, only restricted. In recent days, weeks, more and more cases of insanity has been reported and while their insanity differ from individual to individual, there is one word linking them all together. Cthulhu!
Now I ask you, dare you seek the truth? Maybe the world as we know it is just that: What we know. Maybe though, maybe there is more to this recent plaguing insanity than just coincidence. Do you believe in magic? Do you believe there is more to this world than what man has witnessed with their mortal eyes? Do you believe in ghosts?
If so, there is a city in Massachusetts named Arkham where the cases of insanity are higher than anywhere else in the world. If you do not already live there, venture now and seek out the answers that science and logic can not give you.
If digging into the myth of this Cthulhu is something you want nothing more than to avoid, pray to whatever God out there that you do not already live in this insanity plagued city.
What is to be expected?
Cthulhu Chronicles: Tidings of madness and woe is a roleplay touching several genres, including horror, adventure, criminality and modern fantasy. You will be a normal human with any kind of work and you will either be forced into the world of Cthulhu or joined it willingly in search for answers. What the future has in store for you remains a mystery.
Who am I?
You are whoever. Maybe a professor from Germany, a soldier from Russia, a teacher from New York, a private investigator from down under or a student at Arkham's glorious Miskatonic University. You could be in the city Arkham to visit a friend, you could be living there, working there or you could be going there to investigate the insanity and death that has plagued the city. Why you are there is up to your imagination to decide.
Note that you are a normal human being. You do not have superpowers, you do not know magic and you are not a collector of magical tomes. You could be cunning in the Cthulhu mythos, but for all your character knows it is just a myth. A myth that is slowly becoming frighteningly more real as things move on. This roleplay will be acting inside yet outside the fictional world created by H.P Lovecraft, meaning that while it is the world of Cthulhu, in this world H.P Lovecraft has existed and numerous books he has written exist in the roleplay.
What your character does for a living, what it is doing there and what it is like is all up to you.
How do I start?
How you start should depend on why you are there. You could be arriving by train, bus or you could finally reach your destination by car. You can have a house there, or live at a friends place and have your character believe it will be a day like any other. You could be investigating one of the many murders or disappearances, should that interest your character or if that is what your character does for a living. You could have your interest in the recent spread of insanity peaked and you want to visit the Asylum. Your friend could be missing or hospitalized for reasons that has remained a mystery so far. You could be praying in the church or you could be in the middle of class.
While you are of course allowed to think of your own start, note that while it is often prefered you must not start near everyone else. I will be little by little pulling all characters towards one another by one mean or the other in order to form our adventerous group.
Where exactly is it we start?
Arkham is a fictional city in Massachusetts. The precise location of Arkham is unknown, although it is probably near both Innsmouth and Dunwich. However, it may be surmised from Lovecraft's stories that it is some distance to the north of Boston, probably in Essex County, Massachusetts.
Arkham is the home of Miskatonic University, an institue which finance bold expeditions and projects that research the occult. It is also, as the name imply, a school that has a general teaching position, teaching all the expected classes and some more prominent courses, among other medicine. Other notable institutions in Arkham are the Arkham Historical Society and the Arkham Sanitarium. The Arkham Sanitarium is also known as the Asylum, or the Arkham Asylum.
Arkham is an old city, old buildings although well preserved. Arkham's main newspaper is the Arkham Advertiser, which has a circulation that reaches as far as Dunwich. Arkham’s most notable characteristics are its gambrel roofs and the dark legends surrounding the city for centuries. Occurrences such as the disappearance of children, men and women (presumably murdered in ritual sacrifices) and other bad doings are accepted as a part of life for the poorer citizens of the city.
Despite all, Arkham is calm and somewhat numb, a thypical rural city where people mind their own and policemen cruise the streets in boredom (Save the times when murder or disappearances are reported).
Death, insanity and disappearances plague Arkham, Massachusetts. Do you want to know why?
