I'm rather curious....in your opinion which of these two held the largest territory during their prime?

The USSR or the Roman Empire?

Neither. They were both gay. The British Empire FTW.

According to wikipedia the USSR had a territory of 20 000 000 km². Further the Roman Republic in 50BC had 1 950 000 km² and the Roman Empire in 117 AD had 5 000 000 km²

Which should neatly end this thread, the USSR was about 4 times as big.

What he said, the British empire at it's peak was the largest in history with the Mongol Empire being second.
To answer the exact question of the thread it would be the USSR. But Rome held much bigger sway over the world during it's time than the USSR did during it's. It's also estimated that at it's peak, one fourth of the world's population lived under Roman rule, a greater percentage than lived under Moscow's.
