The idea is automated flight. You know, autopilot. They already have trajectories, approaches, takeoffs, etc. all mapped in 3D space for airports for many different aircraft (cause a Cessna is not going to have the same approach, speed, etc. as a 747.) Of course, they'd have to improve the AI much more than what it is now, for the autopilot, but it is certainly possible NOW with current technology. It would just be really really expensive to do and take forever.
I think letting the programmers perfect autopilot cars, first, is a good idea. After they get that down (which they practically have), then we can work on having traffic automated and completely run on autopilot.
