It's because it was a pretty big deal back in 1912 when it first came onto the scene. Largest ship of its kind to date, with new technology that caused it to be deemed unsinkable, maiden voyage with some rich and famous people onboard... and then an iceberg killed it on its first journey and nearly everyone involved died.
Same reason why people remember the Hindenberg. Big and new and shiny, then boom.
