It was so advanced that Brainiac 5 thought it was too much power for the Legion to have so they locked the first one away.

I'm pretty sure its official background is that it was a piece of Controller tech that reverse engineered the Green Lantern ring but increased its magnitude by an enormous degree so that it could essentially warp reality.

Darkseid called it a cargo cult Motherbox but that's probably just posturing on his part.

An Orion buff could tell you all the amazing things the Motherbox has done but what I am sure of is that its calculated parts of the ALE, healed grievous wounds, acted as a means to calm Orion's rage, created weapons and armor from nothing, and of course it can open Boom Tubes.

Also when Iron Man had one in JLA/Avengers he was practically blowing a load over the upgrade it gave him and he was taking down JLAers that he should never have been able to seriously challenge, guys like Kyle Rayner.
