I personally think that is debatable. Now we can be sure that Alexander could beat both his sons in their regular forms, but I think that Alexander beating Marcus when he was a hybrid is speculation.
Argument that Alexander > Marcus (* Alexander > Marcus Hybrid =/> Selene Hybrid)
But the thing is when Alexander saw Marcus, he knew he had become a hybrid, yet his speech still leads us to believe Alex believed he could've beaten his son. Of course we are relying on Alexander's judgement ...
But I think it is a reasonable position to take, Selene was a nobody before taking Alexander's blood, and afterwards, she had the capability of beating Marcus. Now we know taking blood doesn't make you stronger or even equal to the person you took it from (Selene was turned by Viktor and we know she is nowhere near his level), so that gives us some indication that Alexander would've been far stronger than Selene/Marcus.
If we accept that Alex is stronger, it then follows we must also believe that he is LEAGUES above his son (in context of the alternate argument below).

I know that Selene was capable of beating Marcus thanks to the blood infusion, but my impression is that in Underworld, you always become stronger then the parts that made you. Michael for instance is much stronger then both a Werewolf and a vampire.
There's a problem with that line of thought. You state that a hybrid is stronger than a werewolf or a vampire - but how strong is a werewolf or a vampire? There is no average level we can use to gauge it, it all depends on age and also who the sire was. But you're right, hybrid's start out much more powerful when first turned than any Lycan or Vampire when they first turn, enough to match an Elder, but we don't know if he was stronger than Marcus or William (in a rejuvenated state).
Argument that Marcus > Alexander (* Marcus Hybrid > Alexander > Selene Hybrid)
Since we know that turning into a hybrid gives you a COLOSSAL boost in power (so much so that a newly turned hybrid could take on an Elder), it is also not unreasonable to believe that Marcus, already the most powerful Vampire, gained more than enough power to surpass his father (unless we believe Alex was far above Marcus to begin with).
But the fact that he lost to Selene makes this argument hard to support. I'd say the facts don't add up because the writers did not think it through like we are doing.
