The battle's end was never shown, but apparently he was able to hold his own enough to keep Nekron from gaining a foothold in the main reality.

I would say being able to fight Nekron was a PIS showing for him because IIRC he got defeated by Blue Devil and early (aka non-godlike) Swamp Thing.
