Which side is more powerful, and why?
If you're asking this question, it would be better to determine what you mean by "powerful" first.
The Dark side allows its followers to achieve power over others, over your environment, and to leave a powerful splash in the river of time.
The Light side gives its followers power over themselves and the ability to try to create peace and prosperity, which in the end has an even longer lasting effect than the brutal ripples of the Sith.
If you're talking about a straight-up fight, Dark side tends to stomp Light side more often than not because they crave the ability to dominate and their training leads them in that direction.
Bane is a hypocrite; he says that it's foolish to work for the good of the whole of the sith and not for yourself, and yet he himself admits that he won't live to see the sith rise to power.
Oh, and the light side has always won...with the exception of the Great Jedi Purge, in which the sith created an Empire...that lasted for 20 or so years. Oh and the Legacy comics, but they'll probably end up losing in a few years anyway.
