I didn't see any need for it before, but now Marvel is making films connecting the larger Marvel Universe...
Plus, Samuel Jackson has said in other interviews that War Machine will play a part in the movie. So it's really getting like the comics, where different titles pick up plot points and run with them.

That's very funny, finding out SHIELD basically inspired the G.I. JOE revival 30 years ago. Never thought about it.

I kinda hope a rampaging Hulk is the reason for the initial gathering. That would be epic!
