What is the point of the deflection towers on the Death Star?

Luke mentions them in ANH, but you never see them and there is never an explanation to their purpose.

It's just another gizmo on de DS. Prolly to deflect blasts from big attack ships. Remember, the DS was built not to take small fighters into account as a threat. So I doubt they serve any purpose in deflecting the X-Wings.

It is a massive plot hole and enormous error that GL overlooked. Time to redo the OT...again.
