They had to come up with some way to kill him since in the book he got his head sawed off by The Governor with Michonne's sword. I guess the way to do that was make him stupid and forgetting to check the entire house.

Yeah, Rick's rant was Shane incarnate, Rick even starting getting Shane's simian-like gait.

I wish every time Rick got angry he'd just instantly grow a beard, and when he calmed down it would recede back into his body.
