I've said it before, but if the show stayed truer to the source material(ie. comics), it would be FAR better....But that's not going to happen. The show is on its own path now... Cringeworthy as it may be.
TWD lost its charm by following its source material to the letter in large part. It was not necessary to port every kind of weirdo in the Comics to TV.
Comics can feature numerous stories and villains (cheap to make and sell) but a TV show should have an endgame and not deviate from it.
Woodbury storyline was excellent by any measure and a decent representation of human-oriented dangers in the post-apocalyptic environment. However, Cannibals and Terminus were unnecessary additions and fillers - these groups made the whole 'running into bad guys' trope a repetitive affair in the show.
Negan was a convincing villain in the comics but didn't work out in the show; a sharp reminder that not everything that glitters in the comics is good for TV.
King Ezekiel storyline was also disappointing. The world has fallen apart and somebody have sufficient time and resources to sell himself as a king to a community, and people bought it? Rubbish.
Now the fans are expecting The Whisperers to show up? Another shit-show in the making?
TWD would have been much better with a unique story arc and set of characters. Daryl and Merle do not exist in the comics but these two were/are among the best characters of the show in the first 3 seasons. Merle, in particular, posited a unique kind of threat to Rick's group due to his cowboy mindset - excellent.
They should have replaced Eugene Porter with a university professor who would be seeking answers and trying to explore formerly important locations in search of potential clues and potential cure. Through the course of this journey, they could show us glimpses of the past which contributed to chaos and destruction.
Professor is able to unravel TWD mystery to large extent whereas Rick's group finds refuge in a large settlement where National Guard is intact and trying to maintain order. Professor also runs into this settlement and brings with him important revelations but rivalries surface.
So many ideas.
