He can and has given his heralds so much speed that they can travel entire galaxies in seconds. IIRC one time Nova and Surfer put their speeds together and traveled in time.

Galactus doesn't need his heralds to find him planets. The heralds are only there to warn the peeps on the planet of Galactus' coming.
