Sega confirmed today it will launch an "epic" Thor third-person adventure game in summer 2011 to coincide with the release of the Marvel Studios film. Writer Matt Fraction is serving as a story consultant.

According to the announcement, Thor: The Video Game "will delve deep into the heroic tales of the Thor universe," with players battling "an array of ancient enemies and beasts from the many worlds of Norse mythology by using different battle strategies and elemental powers." Mjolnir will allow gamers to command the powers of the storm. Thor is being developed for all five major console platforms.

Word of the video game leaked in September when notes from a meeting between representatives of Sega and Sony Computer Entertainment America were discovered on a Sega America FTP site.

The God of Thunder Strikes! Thor: The Video Game Coming 2011

LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (July 20th, 2010) – SEGA® Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced they will bring Marvel Entertainment Inc.’s hall-of-fame franchise Thor™ to video game systems in an epic third-person adventure game. Thor: The Video Game™ is scheduled for release on all five major console platforms in summer 2011.

Thor: The Video Game will delve deep into the heroic tales of the Thor universe. Eisner Award-winning writer and lead Thor comic book author Matt Fraction brings authenticity to the narrative as a story consultant, and elevates the story beyond the comic and movie universe throughout the video game. Players will take on an array of ancient enemies and beasts from the many worlds of Norse mythology by using different battle strategies and elemental powers. The sacred Mjolnir, Thor’s legendary hammer, will allow players to command the powers of the storm: wind, thunder and lightning. By earning Valor in combat throughout the game, players will also be able to select from a wider range of abilities, acquire new attacks, powers and upgrades.

“We are proud to be bringing Thor to his first solo video game adventure” commented Gary Knight, Senior Vice President of Marketing at SEGA Europe and SEGA America. “Thor: The Video Game will finally bring the immense power of this iconic hero to lifelong fans, and introduce the God of Thunder to a whole new audience as a true Marvel Super Hero.”

Each version of the game is being developed to take advantage of all five console platforms. The PLAYSTATION®3 and Xbox 360® version will feature cinematic, third-person action gameplay with melee combos, ranged hammer throws, tide-turning elemental powers and an upgrade system to bolster Thor’s powers as gamers progress. Players will be able to follow the same overarching story in the PSP™, Nintendo Wii™ and DS™ versions presented in a comic book style, allowing fans to explore new content in the same universe.

While taking its inspiration directly from the mythology of the comics, Thor: The Video Game will launch around the time of the upcoming Thor film adaptation from Marvel Studios.

Brought to the Marvel Universe by the legendary Stan Lee and his brother Larry Lieber, and penciled by noted artist Jack Kirby, Thor first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1962. Based on Norse mythology, the Marvel character of Thor became a comic book Super Hero both in his own right and as a member of the Avengers alongside comic book icons The Hulk™, Iron Man™ and Captain America™. Thor: The Video Game marks the character’s progression from mythology to comics, TV, then film and now to interactive entertainment in his first standalone appearance in a videogame.

It looks good surprisingly.

This is going to suck. Unfortunately so will the movie.

Yup.

Sega. /shudder

Sega needs stop.

A Thor game done right would be so neat though.

Another movie-based-videogame made by Sega. Remind me how they're still in business and not bankrupt due to the long line of games that suck.

I for one will wait and see. It's Thor, some win has to get in there somehow.

But it's Sega making this game. SEGA! These days, the only thing you may find good in their games are the character designs. 😐

From Kotaku:

The Mighty Thor Faces His Deadliest Foe Yet

He's faced off against gods, giants, and serpents so large they wrap around the entire planet, but even the mighty Thor might not be powerful enough to survive next year's video game adaptation by Sega.

Through its long-term agreement with Marvel to produce video games based off of the comic book company's live-action films, Sega has already managed to make The Incredible Hulk mediocre, while soundly defeating The Invincible Iron Man not once, but twice. Now Sega's Galactus level hunger for destruction turns its gaze on Thor.

Take up the mystical hammer Mjölnir (mole-near) and fight the good fight in Thor: The Video Game for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, DS, and PSP. Guide the Odinson through a third-person adventure that will see him battling gargantuan foes the likes of Ulik, Ymir, and Surtur. Wield the elemental powers of wind, lightning, and thunder, gaining Valor points you can spend on abilities, powers, and weapon upgrades.

Weapon upgrades? You upgrade Mjölnir? That seems...wrong, somehow. Almost as wrong as telling us we'll fight Ymir the frost giant and then telling us we'll be battling foes four times larger than Thor. Ymir better be a lot larger than four times human size.

The console version of the game will feature an epic story by Eisner Award-winning author Matt Fraction, known for making characters sit around and talk for long periods of time, like they did in the last Iron Man game, also written by Fraction.

The PS3 and 360 versions will share a similar visual style, with the PSP and Wii going for a more comic book style look. The DS version will be a side-scrolling platformer, which actually sounds exciting in comparison.

"We are proud to be bringing Marvel's Thor to his first solo video game adventure," commented Gary Knight, Senior Vice President of Marketing at SEGA Europe and SEGA America. "Thor: The Video Game will finally bring the immense power of this iconic hero to lifelong fans, and introduce the God of Thunder to a whole new audience as a true Marvel Super Hero."

Between getting the Sega treatment and the hideous movie costumes, Thor might have finally met his match.

If i were Marvel i tell Sega to **** off

Seriously THQ, Activision and Capcom were the best ones they had making the games.

You forgot to add Raven. If they can make X-Men Origins Wolverine the videogame a success, surely they can make a Thor game successful as well.

The DS version sounds alright.

Interesting. Now show me some gameplay footage and I will judge it then.

Yeah it looks good but theres bound to be something wrong with it since Sega is involved

also Nemesis that link i posted has some gameplay.

From a vid I saw its going to be GOWish.

YouTube video

Meh.

looks better than most movie tie ins, but that's really not saying much

Game is looks like its missing something. Could be the linear -small puzzle travels -> beat enemies in circle arena -> boss- that going around a bit too much.

Will probably get the same feel from playing the Hulk games, in that we know we're a powerful being but the game does nothing to show it.
