Culture

does modern society even have a Culture?

what constitutes a Culture?

i live in a country that has no real since of self at least in my opinion.. our food is borrowed, our religion is borrowed even our ppl are from all corners of the world.. what is our culture and why would it be considered a culture?

i mean is MTV, coca cola, hamburgers and hollywood be considered a culture?

i know the united states isnt alone anymore many places are somewhat similar and in the same boat... think'in canada maybe possibly englandcanadian

also another think i have a problem is ppl who think that you cannot possibly have a culture outside your own home and background.

example:

if i am white or whatever why is it not possible to be a Buddhist and make it not just part of my religion but culture... why do some ppl think that if you take MA its not a culture or a way of living?

not all dojo's are commercialized to the point that it is just another thing like soccer or gymnastics with no spiritual meaning or deeper meaning... some ppl take their training seriously.. why is it okay for some things to be a culture to one group of ppl from one part of the world but not be for another person?

b/c he wasnt born into it? even though he takes it just as seriously but just happens to be of a different skin tone?

do we have to be born into a group culture or can we not simply adopt them?

talk conversate among yourself....

can MA be a culture to a white/brwn/blk man if he takes it seriously?

can bhuddism be part of a white/brwn/blk man culture even if he is born and lives in germany?

can we not practice native tribal traditions although not be part of any particular tribe?

what is it to have a culture?

In its broadest sense, "culture" is humanity striving for immortality, by passing on those memes (cultural "genes"😉 which best enable survival. How specific societies enact this obviously varies, based on resources, values, group self-concept, etc.

Modern life has a culture, one which seems to value adaptation and change at least as much as tradition and stability.

Off-hand, I would say an indivudual's culture depends largely on where and how they were raised. One can certainly adopt aspects of another culture later in life, or even convert entirely, but those memes acquired when young are rooted very deeply.

Every culture has things borrowed which is great! Like Jesus was a Jew, our letters are Latin, our numbers Arabic, our pizza Italian, our radiators are Russian, spaghetti are Italian which in turn are Chinese brought back by Marco Polo, out horoscopes are Sumerian, paper Chinese, decimals are Indian... yoghurt is Persian...etc.

It's all good.

Trust me, America has a culture, and it is different to many others. In England we may speak the same language, but our cultures do differ.

Lil' is right Britain prides itself on being "multi-cultural" but I dont know if it has done us many favours.

Culture is alot to do with identity, what defines you as a person. whether it be down to the clothes you wear and music you like or whether it it religion based behaviour.

I, myself prefer not to fit into a label. Cultures like religions, have their own set of rules and expectations, ettiquet.

Everywhere has culture. I like some parts of american culture, but not others.

what culture has influenced you'll the most?

Indeed. I think there should be more emphasis on Britishness, because otherwise, people who go to Britain are themselves confused as to what culture to integrate into...since British culture is kind of up in the air.
It's no wonder many chose to stick around in their communities.

I believe government should fund an 'integration' program for new immigrants which would include free English language classes and incorporates a bit of British history, some common practices in England across all social classes.
Maybe incorporate some cultural outings and the such, talk about job markets and education equivalents for professionals...

I don't really believe that specific "cultures" even exist anymore outside of the ones that go out of their way to isolate themselves and cling to traditions. Globalization's transformed what used to be different cultures for various races and ethnicity into just one or two cultures for each country.

Only if you take a very broad view. I can drive for less than a day in any direction and find noticeably different cultures in the cities I stop in.

Where do you live?

For me, culture means caste, religious beliefs, traditions, language, etc

Music, food, language, taboos, festival/holidays and traditional clothing.

There's also hybrid cultures. For example: Mexican-American or Chicano culture is seperate and distinct from both Mexican and mainstream (aka-White) American culture.

Exactly; Indians/South Asians. The words "caste" and "Hindu" practically go hand-in-hand.
