Aesthetics aren't much more than a bonus for me in fighting games, but your complaint is actually quite common. I can actually understand the position somewhat, so don't take that as a criticism. Still, BlazBlue, Guilty Gear, Arcana Heart and their ilk all get hated on despite being fantastic games. 🙁
I'm in it more for the mechnics in the game. I'd play a stick figure fighting game provided the system was good and enjoyable.
