Othniel C. Marsh did this with the Brontosaurus back in the day. He had most of the body of a newly discovered dinosaur, but was missing the skull, so to beat out a rival, he used a skull from a different dinosaur.
In the end, the name Brontosaur isn't valid, they're really an Apatosaurus, or something along these lines.
