Heh, I think a distinction needs to be made between when a person tries to simply deplete surfers energy reserves ala quasar, and when a person tries to take surfers actual powers away ala dr doom technology ( I.e his very ability to draw on and manipulate the ambient energies of the universe). This situation wizth h.e definitely seems to be the latter, something thor is certainly not capable of replicating. Moreover surfer has been shown to resist and overcome these type of draining attempts as well.

There's an alternate choice to feeding on populated planets apparently.
Galactus could only eat certain planets, and he needed special equipment to convert the energy into something he could metabolize originally. That made sense.

Arguably Surfer wasn't choosing between Galactus eating planets or suns, he was choosing between Sol and Earth. I agree that the reason "a simple planet wouldn't be enough", it's stupid, but it also means that Galan was dying (he only needs to eat one planet each month). About the genocide, you may as well blame the heralds, Galactus is an abstract, he responds to the cosmic consonance, he's all about keeping balance in the universe and when it comes to the universe killing planets <<< killing stars.
