People still bitching about why they didn't get an asian actor to play Mandarin

he's not even 100% asian if you read up on him.

Yeah, isn't he the bastard child of a English woman and a Chinese man?

Pretty much.

didn't john wayne play gengis khan? at least kingsley is half-way there..

Being a decedent of Gengis Khan is more important to the character of the Mandarin then his Chinese heritage. Something like 8% of people in Asia are descendants of Gengis Khan, and that includes Iran, Pakistan and India, so plenty of options for Kingsley looking people.

Why he calls him the Mandarin though...

It's not as racist as that old SHIELD villain Yellow Claw, but it is outdated for him to be known simply as the Mandarin. Should he have a partner called Cantonese?

we knew eventually it would be another director who would do it.

No fire or ice rays from Mandarin's rings

Plus, according to Fraction's latest take on the character, Mandarin just made up being a direct descendant of Genghis Khan to suit his own ego anyway.

IIRC, the Invincible Iron Man annual said that Mandarin was really just the unlucky bastard son of a pimp and some drugged out English woman that got sold into a prostitution ring in China and he tried to invent this more noble and heroic back story for himself.

It's no more of a deviation than Liam Neeson portraying Ra's al Ghul, who in the comics, is Arabic. Or Tom Hardy portraying Bane, who in the comics, is Latino.

Exactly. Mandarin's nationality is questionable. Though I'm still not comfortable with Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin...

He doesn't suit the visualization of a Eurasian. Though after his performances in Thunderbirds and Bloodrayne where he played such a villain in both films badly, my idea of him playing such an epic role personally is pretty bad.

And it still is. If he pulls this off I'll be blown away. Regardless of his voice and visualization.

Also doesn't help those two movies being bad themselves.......come on Uwe Boll was the architect for that Bloodrayne adaptation.

Eh, I wouldn't say that. The fact that Ra's is Arabic and Bane is Latino aren't all that important to the characters.

However, in the case of Mandarin, his nationality is important. I mean, hell, it's right there in the name. Regardless, I'm looking forward to what they do with the Mandarin in the film. It looks like a cool take on the character.

True. Though his role in Bloodrayne wasn't so bad. And the film was, it takes more than a interesting accent and demeanor to make a villain.

Bane in The Dark Knight Rises was such a figure. And he didn't have the allure that the Joker had in the Dark Knight. It takes more than epic visualization and voice to project such a villain.
It really isn't hard at all to express the Mandarin visually.
And when I found out Ben Kingsly was playing the role I was shocked!
Such a character deserves more than what I've seen from Ben. Though he can still astound me. We have to wait and see. Though my hopes aren't high.
