Current is stronger then classic in telepathy. Classic could do this, so amplify it and then you have current comet

I actually picked the X-Man example because in a weakened state, he sort of wtf stomps Xavier (who, admittedly is trying to talk, in astral form, etc etc, none the less, great Xman feat).
It probably holds for others like Sinister or Exodus, who have very high combat psi feats, but not range

For sure, but it's not definitive as Xavier himself was unsure. Still, even if he is stronger (which is possible) I don't think by a huge margin.
