And has a stronger element of suprise and fear producing.

Dogs are excellent for patrolling ie guard duty for example, they can smell an intruder far earlier than any human, even with night sights.

In tight areas they are particulary usefull, especially if the enemy has big machine guns as apposed to pistols in some urban setting, they are fast, have the element of suprise, fearless and damn vicous if trained properly.

I have a friend who was an MP on the nearby Air Force Base who told me that a riled German Shepherd on a short leash is a greater deterrent for most unruly drunks than a gun.

I wouldn't doubt it

we've been using animals for military stuff since we started going to war

I recall seeing a story some years back where the head of PETA sent a letter to Yasir Arifat criticizing the use of a donkey as a suicide bomb by the PLO.

Made me laugh a little.

In case it escaped you, I actually listed all those uses in my reply - what I said they aren't used for is combat and nowhere in your examples is combat mentioned.

As it is said in the article, they were given titanium fangs - those are not for DETECTION but for COMBAT - you actually commented on their ability to tear through enemy armour.

All you've posted there is dogs doing the following - retreating, alerting, detection, yet nowhere did you write ''dogs trained for combat with their human counterparts, given weapons for maximum damage.

You managed to highlight a single dog who charged enemy's hide out - my cat actually managed to make shit ton of weird noise that deterred my friend from coming into my apartment.
I may now claim I train cats for deterring strange people from breaking into my house.

...

oh, ok, then the basis of your criticism was wrong in the first place. The dog was there for detection

what I posted did talk about their use in taking down fleeing targets or defending their handlers, where a titanium tooth would be effective

I don't see why this seems so outlandish to you... there have been news stories about war dogs consistently since the Iraq war has been going on

Well, it's been a good number of days since his death and things got even more violent.

Well done yanks, well done.

what violence are you talking about?

are you inferring that the fact AQ might want to get revenge on us for attacking their leaders is a reason not to attack them?

I think he's implying that, you've inferred though that that is what he implied.

hey, I jump to conclusions as quickly as the next person

I like to make sure I understand what someone is saying before I argue against it

also, the inherent silliness of some arguments becomes very apparent when rephrased in such a way

Neat physics thing. Titanium isn't especially good for things like knives, swords, and clubs. It has a high strength to weight ratio but a poor strength to volume ratio. If you make a tooth out of it you're limited to a particular volume and end up with a replacement tooths that's fairly weak compared to steel or something else. Certainly no armor piercing ability.

What I've been told is that the titanium teeth are just normal replacements.

interesting

I hadn't heard about the teeth, and was going with the article that said they were for armor piercing. It didn't make a whole lot of sense anyways, as ballistic armor is relatively weak against piercing generally, but I figured the army would know better than me.

as just a replacement thing, there are really no more mysteries about the dog 🙂

🙂 awesome

I think people are less likely to fire on a dog than they are a human, there are a number of videos like that, and the dogs always look uber.

probably should have mentioned police dogs in my posts 😛

Doubt a criminal would hesitate to shoot a dog, if he's already shooting at cops. The dog is just a small and fast-moving target. Also, the "out shit, it's coming, it's coming!" factor probably doesn't help with the aim.

Military dogs go through similar training as police dogs. So it's about the same.

maybe, idk, most people only ever have experiences with dogs being loveable, friendly things. It'd be like training a 10 year old to make the take down, there might just be that couple seconds of hesitation that make all the difference.

Whereas firing on a police officer, they can defend themselves, it seems more psychologically "normal", for lack of a better term, I would suspect

True; very possible factor, guess it'd depend on the individual.

true, some psycho probably doesn't care what he's shooting at
