Yes, which he did via cutting Kyle open and taking Ion out of his body while subjecting him and preying on his fears, which led him to being possessed by Parallax. There was context - quite a bit of it - in Sinestro beating Ion. In no way, shape, or form, did he go one on one with Ion Kyle and outright beat him. And of course, that portrayal of Ion pales to Ion 1.
It's a good feat, but I'm not sure exactly how that matters against Thor.
