What If: Grand Admiral Thrawn

I was reading Heir to the Empire, and I liked Pellaeons question. What would have happened if Thrawn had been in charge at the battle of the second death star instead of the Emporer?

I don't think he'd have gone with the superlaser gambit, but the real problem wasn't the strategies themselves, the Grand Admirals who were running the fight weren't bad and the Empire was winning. It was simply the demoralization when the DS was destroyed and the Emperor along with it.

The Emperor wasn't really leading the forces nor was Vader as TTT implies. Piett was in charge instead. Afterwards, Pellaeon orders a retreat... I still have no clue why.

As for your question both the Rebels and the Empire would have lost. Afterall IG-88 hacked the DS 2 and using it he could have decimated both fleets while starting his droid revolution. Stupid I know... Blame KJA for that crap.

Iirc several higher ranking officers had already bugged out with a good share of ships before Pellaeon ordered retreat (and I think someone else had tried to make order of things earlier but was also killed when the rebels destroyed their ship, but I'm less sure of that), and the fleet had really fallen into chaos.

By the time Pallaeon took over, keep in mind he was, like, 12th in command, with everyone higher either dead or left. So that had a large role in what he did.

IG-88 would have still f*cked them all good.

Gawd I hate that story.

Barring him though, and assuming Palpatine was MIA with no Battle Meditation vacuum upon his death, Thrawn would have wiped out the Rebels. After all, it would have been one of his traps.

Ummm...palpatine was certainly helping the forces in a large part.

No he was busy watching Luke and Vader fight when the actual space battle begins.

Not according to thrawn. According to him (unless I misinterpreted something(which i don't think I did)) palpatine was doing exactly what he recruited C'baoth for. Not sure what to call it. Just helping co-ordinate the forces with the force.

Battle meditation. Yeah. However, it's unknown if Palpatine was truly using it adn even if he was he wouldn't really be "in command".

he was using it, according to luke in Outbound flight...

Luke? Outbound flight? That novel is set before the Clone Wars...

I iz confuse

i mean the one where they find outbound flight. oops

There was also Nial Declann using battle meditation as well, and being a Grand Admiral more directly directing things than Palps.
