The Emperor wasn't really leading the forces nor was Vader as TTT implies. Piett was in charge instead. Afterwards, Pellaeon orders a retreat... I still have no clue why.
As for your question both the Rebels and the Empire would have lost. Afterall IG-88 hacked the DS 2 and using it he could have decimated both fleets while starting his droid revolution. Stupid I know... Blame KJA for that crap.

Iirc several higher ranking officers had already bugged out with a good share of ships before Pellaeon ordered retreat (and I think someone else had tried to make order of things earlier but was also killed when the rebels destroyed their ship, but I'm less sure of that), and the fleet had really fallen into chaos.
By the time Pallaeon took over, keep in mind he was, like, 12th in command, with everyone higher either dead or left. So that had a large role in what he did.

No he was busy watching Luke and Vader fight when the actual space battle begins.
There was also Nial Declann using battle meditation as well, and being a Grand Admiral more directly directing things than Palps.
