Eddie Van Halen is a virtuso artist and musician who created some of the best rock music EVER .
not to mention his numerous innovation in the 70s and 80s paved the way for Satch, Steve Vai, etc. Eddie MAKES GREAT MUSIC.
Satch on the other hand is a technician. he is a "TECHNICALLY" good guitarist who knows a lot about music. His music is "OK" though. His solo albums bores the shit out of me after listening to them two-three times. and i Love Hagar but Chickenfoot sucks.
Also, there is nothing revolutionary about Satch.
Van Halen is revolutionary, Satch is a follower.

I gotta go with Satch.
The guy tells a story without words.
Eddie gets his due no doubt, but the only true instrumental effort we got from him was in a porno................ 😮
Or at least as far as I know.
Absolute BS!
Satch is a great "technician". he knows HOW to play the guitar TECHNICALLY he's awesome. but he's a shitty musician and artist.
EVH on the other hand is a TECHNICALLY AWESOME GUITARIST, MUSICIAN AND ARTIST. He created some of the best rock music of all time! PERIOD.

............. 😕
I don't disagree that VH created some amazing riffs. My issue is that he has yet to show he can put out a whole album of his riffs and succesfully tell a story without words. As far as I know that is.
For what it's worth,I don't think Eddie has ever created anything remotely equal to Surfing with The Alien or Flying In a Blue dream.

Steve Vai was Joe's student.here's my ranking.
EVH > John Petrucci > Joe Satriani > Steve Vai
Have you ever heard of the Student surpassing the Teacher? In Vai's case, this is especially true. Steve Vai would destroy Eddie Van Halen if they were cutting heads.
It's even arguable, if Eddie is even in the top 10 best guitarists ever. I think Slash would give him a hard time to be honest.
