IIRC, they split up when Clark went off to college, as long distance didn't work and such. Then she married Pete Ross, but that ended in divorce.
It was part of an arc where Superman was almost killed by Kryptonite poisoning, and Lois remained on assignment rather than coming home to look after him as he tried to get back to health (even his powers were on and off at the time). So Lana shows up, basically nurses Superman back to health, and then leaves when he's good to go. Lois comes back from assignment, finds one of Lana's thongs (even though nothing actually happened), and proceeds to punish Clark over it.
It was part of why she was so pissed, but she had that dressing down from Martha coming. Lois was written as an uppity b*tch in that arc, with zero respect for her husband. It speaks volumes when Wonder Woman and Lana do more for him than his own wife.
Lois is generally written as either an uppity cow that puts her career before her marriage, or as basically background to Superman without really doing much. Loeb was the last writer to get her right imo, as he made her strong without making her a ****.

Partially. I've long since believed (based on arcs like that) that Lois is the kind of woman who has to have things her way, and likes to be the dominant partner in a relationship. In every sense.

Having a dominant partner is not what's bad about Lois, what's bad about her is the way Clark is always written to be lower himself for her.
I mean if i was Superman, no way in hell would i lower myself all the time just to keep someone, am not saying Clark needs to be a dick, but what the writers fail at was the lack of back bone he never have when it comes to Lois, and that's one of the reasons i applaud DC on breaking off there marriage.

I'd say it's both, but yeah, I agree to an extent.
The sad thing is, the guy who did write Lois being that way had actually planned to have them reconcile later, but he was kicked off the book before then (which in all honesty wasn't surprising).
