It's a great point though, of course all places have their problems. And radicals exist in all places, but the reaction of the people around and the authorities towards such extremism and ignorance is more important in judging how things are, than a lone person expressing their own opinion and nothing else.

There is a really interesting double edge to this kind of rabid provincialism in that bigots are rarely interested in contemporary contributions to western culture (one of the most notable of which being the waning of prejudice) but hold up antiquated achievements as particularly impressive.
