I believe its only logical to assume characters are fighting to the best of their ability rather than assuming they'll fight like shit. By that logic team 2 loses because they all trip over their own feet or something.

Its how we've always argued. High-end feats take precedence.

In which case we're to believe that Luke Cage would whoop Dr. Doom's ass, since that would be "Luke Cage fighting to the best of his abilities".

That type of thinking is how you argue Star Wars characters. That is not how you argue comic book characters, because unlike with star wars, comic book characters' powersets are wildly inconsistent and are more at the mercy of the current plot.
