Sikhs angry at Jay Leno

Doesn't really seem like that big of a deal to me, like if this had been aimed at the Vatican no one would care.

But maybe Sikhs are just a lot more sensitive to this kind of thing considering they've been oppressed for most of their existence.

Still...consulting the US State Department is a bit much...

Re: Sikhs angry at Jay Leno

Idiots really need to stop being so sensitive, it was clearly just a joke and the picture was used as a prop.

This comment was particularly lulzy: ""Freedom does not mean hurting the sentiments of others..."

Umm...yes...it completely does mean that. As long as its not blatant hate speech intended to incite violence, which this clearly isn't.

And how is the temple not to be viewed as a "place of wealth" when its plated with gold?

That is . . . wow, the State Department?

I doubt Leno had any idea the Golden Temple was anything but a big golden temple.

At least we can be fairly certain that Sikhs won't kill anyone over this. Or torch anything.

Still, silly thing to get upset about. This is certainly not a reason to create an international incident.

Stucco was hard to come by that day.

operation bluestar?
assassination of Indria Ghandi?

😛

I really hope the State Department tells them to get on a dick.

Or as the Ukrainians would say: Na khuj!

According to this article India has a history of whining about things like this to other countries.

And I like this guy's position:

Suhel Seth, a prominent Indian media commentator, accused the government of lacking a sense of humour and focusing on trivial issues.

"Jay Leno is a comedian, take him with a pinch of salt. But our politicians do not want to address real issues, like getting clean water to people. They would rather talk about silly issues," he told AFP.

The "thin-skinned, easily-antagonised government" should take a reality check and "lose the fragile ego", he said.

"As India's profile rises people are going to take a dig at us. We must have the ability to laugh at ourselves," he added.

Though I disagree that this was a "dig" at all. As someone on another site suggested Leno's writers probably didn't even know what the temple was and just Google searched "golden building" to make a joke about Romney's wealth.

India needs to eat a dick.

The implications would be horrific, it would basically make American free speech subservient to the whims of religious entities and foreigners.

But these people don't have a chance in Hell. There's a reason Jay Leno hasn't commented yet. The best thing for him to do is just stay silent and wait for the courts to throw this case out without any major media attention.

Edit: Reading the article again I see that it's an American who's suing. While that makes it slightly less farcical I still don't think anyone will seriously follow this case. For one thing (and this is really unfortunate) no one cares about the Sikhs, just look at the Sikh who was murdered after 9/11 for being confused for a Muslim, people actually protested when the state government tried to make a memorial to him. For another AFAIK these sorts of things fall under a 'reasonable person' standard, and I don't see any reasonable judge in America aware of the situation who would think that Leno was intentionally, maliciously practicing hate speech. What makes it especially stupid is their attempt to call it a case of 'racism'. It would take one Hell of an abstraction to construe this as a racial jab at Indians.

Then Leno will have to pay 'Indian-American Randeep Dhillon' money for butt-hurting him and then they'll be a precedent for others to cry and sue for anything perceived as religiously offensive.

Dude's just looking for a hand-out, expecting Leno will settle out of court with a pay-off. I did like where Dhillon claimed "hurt the sentiments of all Sikh people in addition to the plaintiff", maybe he's willing to share the money with all "hurt" Sikhs?

edit: I'm hoping the judge throws out the lawsuit as frivolous and Leno counter-sues the clown for hurting his feelings.

Heh, on another site an Indian pointed out that one of the ministers who is really stirring up this pot in India is facing a reelection campaign in a heavily Sikh province.

Coincidence? I'm sure it's just that.

IIRC, the Supreme Court case where Larry Flint won set a precedent were one can't sue over hurt feelings caused by obvious satire.

not to mention Piss Christ

EDIT: holy ****, some ******* destroyed the picture...

Is there an original of the picture to be damaged? Wiki talks about "prints".
