Well, that's very hard to answer. An unlocked one on Amazon costs 650$.
What carrier are you on, and what plan do you use?
Verizon sells it for 299$ on a contract: http://shop.verizonwireless.com/?id=Samsung%20Nexus

I'm using O2. I get free texts and 100 free minutes of calls, is getting a new phone gonna affect that at all?
Oh, you live in England not the US, my bad.

You can read up here.
Or the iPhone:

Screw smart phones and their 90$ a month bill. I have a virgin mobile pay as you go. I pay $20 a month for 500 anytime minutes and unlimited texts...,thats all i need it for.
What do you do when you poop, ffs?
I read magazines before I had a smartphone. That could get cumbersome in a small shitting place.
I recommend, if you can wait, waiting for a second gen ICS phone (ice cream sandwich).

I think the Galaxy Nexus is cheaper. But you should decide whether you want such a big phone. It has an awesome screen, but it is quite huge. I don't mind though.
I think a 5" screen is the perfect size. I measured and that's the best size for my hands. Your hands are much bigger so I would think a 7" phone is the perfect size for you.
The tiny 3.5" iPhone screen disappears completely in my hand.
If I remember correctly, Steve is not a tiny dude. Isn't he 5'11" to 6'2"? The 4.5" screened phones should fit nicely into his hands.

But that's just cause you get bend over and taken to brown town in the US. In England and other parts of Europe you can get a decent plan for like 20$. Also there's decent pay as you go options.

Nah, that's crazy. My Galaxy Nexus is is about right for me at 4.65". I might be alright with a 5" phone, but smaller ones are okay too. If you want to use your phone one handed (which I think a majority of people want to do, including me), you can't go larger than 5" really, or way too much will be out of reach (even for someone with very large hands like me).
I do think the iPhone got it about right in having a screen size that's fine for almost everyone (maybe a little bit bigger wouldn't be so bad). For me the iPhone is about the minimum screen size I'd want, the same way the Galaxy Nexus is close to the maximum.
And for people like steverules, I think they will just be most happy with the iPhone. It's the easiest, most straightforward and generally most stable experience in smartphones.
Oye:
Software:
iOS software platform made by apple
Wp7 software platform made by Microsoft
Blackberry software platform made by RIM
Android. A software platform made by google
Hardware
iPhone... Original, 3G, 3GS, 4, 4s.. All run the iOS software. Currently at ups 5.xx. Apple locks down their phones hard. If you can jailbreak it is a great phone as far as functionality, but you will feel hindere otherwise compared to android.
Several phones run wp7... With the biggest backing being Nokia. Nokia recently released the lumia series 700, 800 and 900 with the 900 taking best of show for all cell phones at the recent 2012 CES. Nokia also did away with their own I house Symbian software platform to switch almost entirely to microsofts wp7.
Blackberry is made by RIM. A strong business oriented phone whose failings in creating easy to use web functions hindered them in recent years... The blackberry touch being one of their being flops.
Androids software is on MANY phones:
Motorola has the Droid series of phones
Samsung has the Galaxy series
Other companies include LG, HTC, and more...
Even thought each company may release a new android platform phone in the same month... Not all phones will have the latest version of android.. And those that don't can take months to update. Also ecause each phone company is releasing so many phones.. Their updates to te software is not as frequent...

That's not a bad summary of the state of smartphones at the moment.
I'd say get a phone that suits your personality.
Android if you like versatility, and like to customize everything.
IPhone if you enjoy simple basics and fluid entertainment.
WP7 if you also enjoy basics, but can't fathom paying for an iPhone.
Blackberry if you're an office employee and you text, email, and IM associates a lot.
Or if you're cheap, go prepaid.
