The Europa Report

Saw something about this while flipping through Entertainment magazine. Sounds interesting. I don't even know what kind of film it is, though... horror, action/adventure... what. Definitely Sci-Fi, though. And I like the premise:

ComingSoon.net

"For decades, scientists have theorized the existence of liquid water oceans on Jupiter's moon, Europa. We've recently discovered new, captivating evidence that these sub-surface oceans do exist and could support life.

We've sent six astronauts from space programs throughout the world on a three year journey to Europa to explore its oceans and confirm these findings.

We're proud to be at the forefront of the effort to prove the existence of extra-terrestrial life within our solar system, within our lifetimes."

(MovieViral.com)

Oh, okay. I found the IMDB page. The title there is simply Europa, though. It says it's a Thriller. Hells yeah.

So Jupiter's moon is the new Mars. 😄

Yeah, I think Sci-Fi fans need a vacation from Mars.. lol

Ah, dammit. I read HERE that it's gonna be "Presenting itself as a documentary of sorts." That shit's usually just annoying. I much prefer good steady-cam filmmaking in the style of Roman Polanski, or David Cronenberg, or Frank Darabont. I hope it's not annoying. Stuff like Cloverfield kind of works, cuz that's the whole schtick, but I thought it was inconsistent and dumb in The Hurt Locker.

The film now has a distributor, Magnet Releasing.

This looks pretty fu#king cool...

Looks like it might be good.

Just hope it's not like that stupid moon movie with the moon spiders. Couldn't finish that.

Was gonna say the same. I fear another Apollo 18. Biggest letdown of a film since The Village.

Well, I have not seen Apollo 18, but hopefully quotes like this will give evidence of it being a bit more elevated in grandeur than your ordinary run-of-the-mill space sci-fi...

"One of the most sincere, suspenseful, and fascinating science fiction movies of the past few years."

-FEARnet

I like the poster...

It seems to be going for an ultra realistic approach to space travel, i.e. a mission that would be feasible within the next 20 years or so. I like the fact that it's kind of sneaking through the back door, this could potentially be a cult classic.

I didn't see anything about sodomy. lol

The sequel's about Uranus. 😉

You know what would really be badass is, in the end, they were all hallucinating. Multi-billion dollar three year operation, ****ed by how fricken unnatural prolonged removal from gravity, daylight, cabin fever, the sheer distance and isolation, the sheer number of existential threats and the hopelessness of survival in the event of catastrophe, coupled with the sheer enormity of emotional exaltation, additive from the stress and immaculate unnature of it all - could have devastating effects on the human psyche...that could be more frightening than a possession case.

I tip this to be the surprise hit of the year.

I doubt it'll be a "hit" in that it makes hundreds of millions (let's be honest, I doubt it's gonna have huge cat-people or gigantic CGI robots), but yeah, first of all I hope it's good/interesting/provocative, and consequently I hope it's successful.

I remember thinking that Apollo 18 was gonna be Blair Witch in space. Instead it ended up more like Blair Witch 2 in space.

So this is available OnDemand now. I looked it up and it's $9.99. A bit pricey for a small screen rental (especially since I'm not sure whether it's HD or not). Anyway, I'm hopefully going to watch it soon somehow (potentially via other means)...

a few snippets from RT....

"Smart, suspenseful, and fascinating. Maybe the best indie sci-fi film since Moon."

-Scott Weinberg
FEARnet

"Europa Report is an intelligent breath of fresh air with some awe-inspiring visuals, proving that an engrossing atmosphere and technically sound story can be just as effective as cheap thrills and easy scares."

-Matt Donato
We Got This Covered

"It doesn't feel like a huge event(the scientific accuracy leaves the film feeling a bit dry and procedural)... but the heft and thrills are just enough to recommend it."

Watched and enjoyed this. It's a unique and technically impressive piece of work. The editing has a huge impact on how it plays out. I agree with that one quote about it being a bit "procedural," but they do a good job of keeping the pace moving along and not getting bogged down (again, through editing). The "procedural" aspect also grounds it in a completely believable context, and the film never really strays from that even though it's a pretty fantastical premise. Check this one out for a very nice little indie Sci-Fi treat. (Also, I would hesitate to call it Sci-fi Horror. I think that's misleading. It's more of a Thriller.)
