Yes. Get to a theatre now, if you are a true SciFi fan.

2001: A Space Odyssey is still my all time favourite film.

I second these films:

Forbidden Planet
Totall Recall
Alien
Dark City

I add these:

The Matrix
(the first movie is enough, but the rest of it isn't too bad for some I guess)

Westworld

Rollerball (the original)

Ghost In the Shell
(try to see it subtitled in English with the original Japanese track. The English dubbed version screws up the original lines and the acting.)

Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone
Starman
Explorers
Guyver
Cocoon

Event Horizon

From Beyond

Space Balls

Cube

Thanks for the heads up... I'm gonna check out this and a couple other HP Lovecraft adaptations:

Cool Air
Dreams of Cthulhu: The Rough Magik Initiative

A recently released Looper is another good one.

Most of the movies I have seen based HP Lovecraft are kinda meh....Obviously Re- Animator and From Beyond is great... Dagon is ok Lurking Fear only because Ashley Laurence is in it.

Fixed.

I'd recommend:
Alien series
12 Monkeys
Children of Men
Terminator 1 & 2
Dredd 3D

I always feel like a lone voice when I say that 12 Monkeys is overrated and incredibly boring.

I don't entirely disagree. It's okay. I think the star power of Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis helps it a lot.

I watched From Beyond. Not a huge fan. It has a relatively interesting premise and some fun make-up effects, but overall the meladramatic acting and poor writing pretty much ruined it for me. While I think it had the potential to be elevated (through direction and writing) to an A-quality movie, it's really just B-horror. Sort of reminds me of Hellraiser a little bit, though.

Anyway, I don't remember if I've recommended with or not, but I really liked this little film.. very nice, simple little sci-fi film:

Hunter Prey

Enjoyed Beyond Re-Animator maybe not as much a Re-Animator but it was still good.

There is too much sci/fi & fantasy in movies today. We need a return to realism.

Quite the opposite my friend. Although, there seems to be a bit of a resurgence of sci-fi/fantasy lately.

I did find the movie a bit meh but essentially you've got to be a Terry Gilliam fan to enjoy his dark quirkiness.

It's not even quirky, it's just... stupid.

Prometheus and of course all 6 Star Wars movies.
