Something makes me disagree with you about the notion of Lex Luthor stepping aside and letting someone else take out Superman. To my knowledge (as little as that may be), Luthor has always wanted to be the one to pull the trigger. He wants to prove to Superman and himself that HE is the one that beat him, that Superman isn't necessary in the grand scheme of the Earth and that Luthor IS necessary. Maybe I'm wrong.

You bring up a solid case. How do you think it would exactly go down?

Thanos would promise Luthor that he'd be able to kill Superman himself. Luthor would be taken in by Thanos' and manipulated.
