That's like asking what makes last year's Mortal Kombat game just a more violent MK VS DC.

Heavily modified engine. I don't see how that alone isn't a huge difference. Not to mention a very different fighting system.

It's a solely DC game, so fatalities and anything too bone-shatteringly violent is off the table. The onus is on big, comic book-type battles, with people being tossed through walls (like Boon said, every arena has three areas to fight in). It's a completely different focus, with a heavily modified engine like I said. People have a character specific power, which can mean various things for various people. For Wonder Woman, it actually alters her fighting style.

I don't know why being 2d somehow hurts it; it didn't hurt MK.

Does it have power bars and super moves? Yes, just like plenty of other fighters.

And I don't know how you can say Marvel Nemesis is better when you haven't even played this one.

Because of what Nemesis had. As I explained above........my argument isn't trying to downplay this game. Because it looks fun regardless/
I'm just saying I ain't getting any younger and I want a superhero game that truly shows the powersets of our beloved fictional heroes in a fashion that is closer to the comics we read. With the scope and majesty as the comics we read.

This is just a prettier 2D 1 on 1 bash fest. Don't get me wrong...I love these.
I play SF Alpha 3 religiously. It's fast paced smash em fun.
But it isn't an evolutionary step in regards gameplay. It's just an evolution in graphics.

Nemesis failed commercially because people weren't ready for it yet.
And I still support whole-heartedly a turn-based multi-player superhero game!
It's the only way such feats can be displayed as they are in the comics.
Instead of spam attacks and motion video activated uses of high end abilities.

@ Bro: I really wish that now too.

Yeah, by now, I've given up all hope on Killer Instinct ever coming back (either a new game or rerelease of the two games) as long as they're under Microsoft/Rare. It also frustrates me how they keep teasing people about a third game but never do anything beyond that.

I could definitely trust NetherRealm with the franchise. The style they use for Mortal Kombat and Injustice would fit perfectly for a new Killer Instinct.

Indeed, and look at how long Mortal Kombat had been dead after MK4 (during the rest of the 90's and such before Deadly Alliance and the like came out, though I blame Annihilation for that), or when the series was in even deeper decline until MK9 came out. I know NetherReam could easily resurrect Killer Instinct in a similar fashion to how they did with MK, and wasn't Midway like one of the publishers of KI anyway?

With Rareware under Microsoft, Microsoft could've been had KI as an exclusive franchise of theirs in addition to Halo, Gears, etc., but they shot themselves in the foot as far as that. I hope someone else gets the rights to KI somehow, someday.

And before I'm done being off-topic, huuzah!

What the hell? 2 was one of my favorite budokais in the series. It's the one I remember playing frequently with my cousin. Who's bright idea was it to omit it?

Dunno, but 2 was actually my least liked in that trilogy to be honest. Felt like barebones for a sequel and everything it did 3 did better IMO, minus maybe the intro music.

i honestly thought Nemesis failed because, well, it wasn't a great fighter at all.

My personal opinion, etc.

disagree about turn based games, tbh.

Couple more gameplay videos:

I like this whole "gimmick button" functionality. Reminds me of Deadly Alliance and the like.

idk why but all the talk about nemesis made me think of X-Men Next Dimension. Who else enjoyed that game?

If it wasn't for the endless repeat quotes during battle the game wasn't too bad!
Though Nemesis was 10x better if people knew how to play.

As long as the core gameplay isn't like Deadly Alliance then I don't mind.

Still have Next Dimension collecting dust somewhere with my other old Gamecube games, but I really liked it for its time. Was best with Gambit and Magneto. Game sure had a lot of glitches though where you could get outside the map and be fighting in a completely black background. I remember getting there by accident a lot of times on the stage with Apocalypse in the background. lol

That aside, I wish there was another X-Men game like it in this day and age, but with Cable, Poccy, Sinister, and more of them too.

The gimmick button seems "alright", but I really hope you have the option to turn them off.

Frankly, fighting games live or die (from a longevity perspective) by how viable they are in a competitive environment. If a game has competitive merits than it will get played in tourny's, online, etc. If a fighting game is full of too many gimmicks than it's a turn-off to hardcore gamers.

I hope Netherrealm learns from their last MK game. Mortal Kombat was on a steady decline from too much cheesy bullshit with unbalanced characters, imba abilities and level gimmicks. It wasn't until they brought out the 2010 MK game and focused more on balancing and fighter mechanics that MK became a mainstream fighting franchise again.

*2011

And yeah, I'm sure they learned from it and will continue to do what made MK9 successful. The days of completely unbalanced games from them like Armageddon and stuff are a thing in the past now, thankfully.

Things like the gimmick button I can accept more in a DC game this like though than I would in an MK.

You'd want to turn off the ability to switch fighting styles/weapon styles in the middle of a match?

I don't think he meant in the middle of a match but just being able to have it turned off period.

I enjoyed it but I had it for psp and nemesis was slightly different from console to psp.

I did.

Was your favorite part also utterly destroying Cyclops with every other character (especially gambit)? 😛

Still wondering why, though. It's not like it's going to be game-breaking, at least from early indications.

It's for the same reason that pro Smash Bros. players turn off the item drop feature and only play on Final Destination in tournaments.

There looks to be a huge difference just how the environment affects gameplay in this than compared to Smash Bros. I should know, I used to play it competitively. The items and environment were intentionally designed to be an active part of the battle, not simply static around which fighters duked it out. They're putting more of a focus on environmental hazards in this game, but unless I see something like WarioWare Inc., where random mini games will take place mid-battle and not participating can lead to negative effects on your characters, I get the feeling it won't break the competitive aspect.

Get the gamecube version, a great game. And play it on the Wii if you have one.
A severely underated game.
