Hagrid: It was dark times, Harry, dark times. Voldemort started to gather some followers, brought 'em over to the dark side. Anyone that stood up to him ended up dead. Your parents fought against him, but nobody lived once he decided to kill 'em. {Harrys mother, LILY, screams as she is killed by Voldemorts wand} Nobody...not one. Except you. {close-up of baby Harry.}

Harry: Me? Voldemort tried to kill...me?

Hagrid: Yes. That ain't no ordinary cut on your forehead, Harry. A mark like that only comes from being touched by a curse...and an evil curse at that.

We even have a scene of Lily being killed without the spell backfiring.

Thats before the scene was finally broken down. When it is we find out why he survived. Yes, and the scene ends before we see Voldemort die. Dumbledore explains it in deathly Hallows part 2.

Dumbledore's explanation is incomplete, you're using a lie of omission.

Scene with Lily being killed with no rebound
No scene with Lily being killed with rebound
Scar on Harry's head

What now?

Thats his complete quote. Granted I have never read the books and am going strictly on what was said in the movies.

The quote is complete, his explanation is not.

In the books it is also made explicit that the curse struck Harry and failed to kill him.

We don't ever see the curse hit him in the films as a baby. With the quote I always assumed it rebounded right after the love counter charm took place off camera.

As already mentioned, the books make it clear that the curse hit Harry.

But, I believe even the films make it clear. We see Voldemort kill Lily and then point his wand at Harry...

Think it's in the first film.

Yes, you are right. His wand is pointed at Harry in the first. He can't even really touch Harry prior to his resurrection later with Harry's blood. That explains his comments about being able to touch Harry in the cemetery in GOF. I don't think that people realize this makes him more formidable. I always thought it was a hit kill on his mother than immediate rebound onto himself. He wasn't aware of this magic for the first time and the only way to pull it off means having the choice to live or die in a sacrificial way. Voldemort is aware now of how this magic works.

He is more formidable than ever.

😂

Speaking of GoF, Mad eye actually tells his class that th e only person to survive getting hit with the spell is harry. In the same movie we see it fail again due to priorincantantum (not spelled that way). Thats two time AK failed.

It never hit Harry so was locked in a battle of wills. It never fails unless sacrificial protection which one has to give his life to enact Voldemort is aware of now.

You saying it failed is inaccurate or akin to saying someone missed. Only one way to avoid dying if hit by it in the films; sacrificial protection by having the choice to love or die and drying yourself.

More formidable than ever.

I know he's only a mangled soul 'n all, but why does his body go to dust when he died?

He's called the boy who lived, not the boy who had a meat sheild.

haermm much prefer the latter title.

Probably for dramatic effect and that his soul was so mangled by that point.

According to the book, by that point tom so empty and dark that after he died there wasn't anything keeping him together. PI wasn't a battle of wits. It was caused by their wands having the same core. That's why he was so bent on getting the elder wand. Harry got hit in the 8th movie too. That's 3

Ohh, yeah that makes sense now. Weird and don't get why this would take his solid body away.. but a reasons a reason.

And props for the avi/sig Quan. Staring at Benedict when I reply makes for good eye candy.

I thought you were a guy.

His body is made of a single bone and maybe a cup of blood. It's not nearly as sturdy as one of ours.

Do you even watch the movies? PI was caused by wand cores and the only images it created ended it, you actually see him cast the spell on baby harry, and the reasob it failed in 8 was because harry was technically the master of the elder wand.

His eyes look into my soul.. curse you Sherlock Khan..

@Nate: lol seems legit.

Spoilers?

For what?

I didn't know khan was in the new one...
