The Vatican is the smallest country in the word, w. a standing army only 200 strong. They are however one of the wealthiest and most influental. They're now looking to use the former and increase the latter, by recruiting funding and publicizing the living daylights out of the first religious superhero team.
The Church is looking to usurp the top spot from teams filled w. Pagan gods, Godlike aliens, and that put science over everything else.
Predictably dysfunctional at first, w. many conflicting personalities, the team will bond over the course of many missions, some of which will get them to start questioning the Church’s motives and their own place in the Church’s plans.
THE MAGDALENA
Already has deep ties to the Church, so working out of the Vatican is a simple step. Weilds the Spear of Destiny, and will serve as team leader. Putting a woman in charge is a very deliberate decision by the Church, PR-wise. They also look for her to be their eyes and ears on the team.
ZAURIEL
A Heavenly warrior that the Church is trying hard to stay on the good side of, as he’s flat out stated he answers to a Higher power. Speaking of power, he’s arguably the team’s heaviest hitter. He goes where needed, and right now thats the Vatican.
SON OF SATAN
On the flip side of Zauriel is Damion Hellstrom, also a heavy hitter. He’s on the team as a big ‘screw you’ to his father. The Church has managed to positively spin his demonic origins in their favor, citing his ability and willingness to serve God. Moving to the Vatican would be awkward, but not impossible for him.
FIREBIRD
With impressive flame based powers, and no real family, friends, or even tribal ties developed for her by Marvel, Firebird would be free to follow her faith (her biggest defining characteristic) to the Vatican, and serve on the team. The Church sees her unique ethnicity, gender, and the fact that no American team has ever given her a prominent spot in their ranks as a major coup for themselves.
THE CONFESSOR
Like Batman, this guy never seems to sleep, and would split his time between Astro City and the Vatican. He’d be the team’s obligatory stealth guy/street leveler. Though notoriously publicity shy, Confessor has an urban legend status the Church can play on, and over half a century of experience the team will find invaluable
SERAPH
Israel petitioned for, and was granted, a place on this first ever religious superteam. Another PR move by the Church, who want to seem all inclusive. For his part, Seraph doesnt want to live and work at the Vatican, but, he’s a loyal Israeli and he’ll honor his country's wishes. He brings potent Biblical based abilities to the team.
