Oh no he didn't gain superhuman powers when he had the demon. He was just peak human, and sometimes the demon would come out and attack people but that's it. He only gained superhuman powers after the Master/Sasquatch experiments

Has his age been referenced? Or was his age retconned?

Yeah he was born in 1914, and was referenced in the recent handbook too. The demon story hasn't been retconned, it's still there....just ignored.
